Hardware - Beckhoff EK9000 I/O Modules

Beckhoff EK9000 I/O Modules

Beckhoff Automation provide stackable Input/Output modules for the Beckhoff EK9000 ethernet / modbus buscoupler. For more information about the details of each specific Beckhoff I/O module or buscouplers, please consult the Beckhoff Automation website, and do a search for the specific module or buscoupler.

EK9000

CDP Studio ModbusIO supports most of the EL-xxxx analog and digital modules for the EK9000, using the Complex process-data image. To see which specific modules are supported by CDP Studio, drag in a Beckhoff-EK9000-UDP from the ModbusIO Resource tree and enter into the IO packet. The BeckhoffEK9000IOModules resource should expand and show all the available modules that are supported.

The EK9000 buscoupler typically has a base IP Address of 192.168.1.x (settable via DIP-switches). Its webinterface can be accessed through a web-browser at http://192.168.1.x/config. At the time of writing, the default Username is guest, and Password is 1 (without quotes). If this does not work, please consult the Beckhoff EK9000 manual.

The Beckhoff EK9000 Series accepts reads from modbus address 0x0 and writes are accepted to modbus address 0x800.

Note: Whenever modules are changed, added or removed, make sure to power-cycle the EK9000, or the internal data-image will not be updated.

Note: Make sure to adjust / set the correct FunctionCode in the modbus packet as follows, or there will be communication problems:

  • If you only Read from a device, use ReadHoldingRegisters.
  • If you only write to a device, use WriteMultipleRegisters
  • If you both read and write a device, use ReadWriteMultipleRegisters.

It is possible to add more packets to exchange more data with the buscoupler. See the Beckhoff documentation for more information about which modbus addresses can be accessed.

Note: In CDP Studio, I/O numbering start at 0, meaning that the first channel has the number 0.

See also Modbus I/O Channel scaling and Watchdog.
